How Much Do Concrete Coatings Cost?

A silver mercedes benz is parked in a garage.

With new visual improvements and improved technology, the market for concrete floor coatings is projected to exceed a market valuation of USD 1.5 billion by 2024. With these impressive numbers it’s clear that concrete coatings’ popularity is on the rise, and for good reason.

How much concrete coatings cost is pretty much always less than it costs to forego their use. In short, an uncoated concrete floor will have to be repaired and otherwise redone sooner and more often than a coated one.  There are different types of concrete coatings, though; how much yours costs will depend on what type you go with.

How Much do Concrete Coatings Cost?

The answer to the question, “How much do concrete coatings cost?” depends on a range of factors. The rule of thumb is that they retail generally for somewhere between $30 and $45 per gallon.

Some factors to consider: How long would you like your concrete coating to last? What kind of texture and color are you looking for? Most importantly, what do you want it to protect against?

Types of Concrete Coating

Most concrete coatings fall into one of two categories: thin-film and thick-film. Thin concrete coatings usually go on in layers that are about one millimeter thick; the thicker ones average closer to two or three millimeters.

Some concrete coatings penetrate the surface of the concrete to seal it against different things that can damage it, especially moisture. Even the thin-film coatings can penetrate up to four inches.

Benefits of Concrete Coatings

Just about every time a concrete coating is used, it’s for protection, aesthetics, or both.

There are all sorts of things to protect a concrete floor from–after all, we use concrete because it’s already so durable on its own. Four of the most common predators to concrete that we coat it to fend off are chemicals, abrasion, impact, and temperature fluctuations (also called thermal shock).

As much aesthetic grief can be saved by proper protection, concrete coatings also look better today than they ever have.  In fact, “How much do concrete coatings cost?” is as good of a question for your decorating budget as it is for your building budget!
