Marking Your Territory: How Much Does Fence Installation Cost?

February 6, 2019

Are you considering putting a fence around your yard? Wondering how much money it will cost to install?

Well, while the average cost of fence installation at the present time is around $2,750 , the real answer depends largely on the type of material that you’re looking to use.

Below, we’re going to review the typical costs for the installation of various different fence materials, helping you to decide which is right for you. Let’s begin!

Chain Link

Chain link fencing is the cheapest option available. Installation costs for this specific material fall between $8 per linear foot and $14 per linear foot. For a 200-foot fence, this comes out to between $1,600 and $2,800.

The exact price you pay will be dependent on the quality of the chain link you use. After all, chain link is available in a variety of different gauges. Because chain link fencing is so easy to install, the state and nature of your yard will have very little effect on the overall installation price.

Wood

The usual costs for wood fence installation fall between $8 per linear foot and $16 per linear foot. For a fence of 200 feet, this equals between $1,600 and $3,200 in total.

Again, the exact price that you’ll pay for wood fence installation is dependent largely on the quality of the wood that you use. Fence height can also make a difference in price.

Vinyl

Vinyl fences can usually be installed for between $10 per linear foot and $25 per linear foot. When it comes to a 200-foot fence, this is a range of $2,000 to $5,000.

Obviously, this is a fairly big range. The reason for such a wide range is that there are many different types of vinyl available. Some are quite simply more expensive to buy than are others.

Wrought Iron

Wrought iron fence installation is the most expensive of all. To install this type of fencing, you will have to pay somewhere between $30 and $300 per linear foot. For a 200-foot fence, this comes out to between $6,000 and $60,000 in total.

However, the installation costs for this material only tend to reach 5 digits when the installation is especially troublesome (ie. on a hill). Generally, you can expect to pay between $6,000 and $10,000 for a 200-foot fence.

Aluminum

While not as expensive as wrought iron fences, aluminum fences are still fairly expensive. Generally, you can expect to pay anywhere between $12 and $125 per linear foot for the installation of this material. For a 200-foot fence, this comes out to between $2,400 and $25,000.

Note, however, that unless the ground is perfectly flat, aluminum fence installation is a complex process. For this reason, you should plan to pay no less than $8,000 for a 200-foot fence.
